Question Did the hard drive failed?

Can't suddenly start windows.. it goes into dark screen loop forever and the only thing I can see for a minute is 'automatic repair' and even that disappears.

I managed to do hard drive check via bios and I got this error for the drive:

SMART check: passed

Long DST: Failed

Failure ID: MC6FMV-7T9A32-GXGJMF-61EF03

Did the drive fail?

p.s. the warranty has expired.

Yes, it looks like it failed.
Drives do that sometimes.

For a proper SMART check, rather than a pass or fail diagnostic, I suggest you use CrystalDiskInfo. Look for reallocated, pending or uncorrectable sectors.

The DST is a Disk Self Test - yours failed, its time to warranty or replace the drive.

Do you need to recover data from this?

I will try to take out the drive and connect with another external drive to see if I can recover any data.

I am wondering if there is a website that I could use to find what kind of drive would fit and work with this laptop?

If Amazon says correctly then the 'Item Dimensions are 2.7 x 0.3 x 4 inches'

I am wondering now how to find some Kingston or Samsung brand SSD drive (smallest in terms of storage), how do I know it will fit physically?

That is referred to as a "2.5" drive".
Any standard drive labeled as 2.5" will fit.
SSD or spinning HDD.

Samsung 860 EVO or Crucial MX500 are the default choices. 250GB or larger.

The owner of the PC said as cheap as possible.

If this is to be the only drive in it, neither of those, sadly.
120GB is TooSmall for a single drive.

How much space is consumed on his current drive? If over 75GB...a 120GB SSD will not work.

owner used only for live movies.. don't store any data.. basically just to run Windows 10, so you're saying it's not enough?

'live movies'?

For 'just Win 10', a 120GB would sort of work.
But it never ends up as 'just Win 10'.

Done replaced now with 240gb and it works well..

There are some files left on the old HDD but unfortunately, it cannot be accessed. I tried to do it via an external connector, it detects but can't open the drive.

Managed to scan with HD tune and got a few errors if that helps.
