Hey guys, I am helping a friend with an older computer, and he is having problems with the PC booting. He doesn't know much about computers, and I know it is an older pre built machine. I know his CPU is an AMD Athlon II 235e @2.7, but do not know his motherboard(except it suports dd2 RAM) or PSU. I can probably find out if needed though. Here is what's happening:
When you push the power button, the PC will post (single beep), and I am able to get into the BIOS. After that, it will not go any further. The screen will stay mostly black with some random blue squares on one side. I am confused because as far as I can tell, his CPU does not have integrated graphics, but it allows me to view the BIOS without any issues. There is also a setting to boot from integrated graphics in the BIOS. There is a graphics "chip" installed that I can't find any brand name or recognizable markings on (it is using one of those ribbon connector adapters), but when I try to boot from that I don't even get the blue squares. The screen stays black and never goes further. The PC seems to be running, just with no display (fans spinning, lights on, etc.) I have tried several different cables and monitors all with the same result. My best guess is it's either a video card failure or a motherboard failure. The fact that it still posts though makes me unsure if it's a motherboard. I am trying to avoid telling him replace x or y part, then it doesn't fix it. Anyone out there with help or some insights would be greatly appreciated.
