my friend did the upgrade to windows 10 from windows 7 we was both in a skype call at the time of him doing it but when he got onto the windows desktop on windows 10 he noticed he had everything still on his computer am i correct or is windows 10 meant to format your hard drives/ssd's aswell for the install?

Solution
When you do the upgrade, most everything as far as settings and applications, SHOULD be left intact. When you do a clean install, the slate is wiped clean and a fresh operating system is installed. I recommend doing a clean install after completing an upgrade, to eliminate crap from the old operating system that may have carried over to the new version, but it's not always an immediate option for everybody. If the system is working fine and you are not having driver issues, then it's fine.

how would he go about doing a clean install

You can do a clean install as follows:

1) Check that the software and hardware you mostly use are comptible with Windows 10 and have drivers available

2) Make sure to update all necessary drivers and Windows updates (Doesn't apply when doing a clean install)

3) Some devices might need a specific driver to operate with Windows 10, it might be a good idea to download these Windows 10 compatible versions prior to upgrading to have them ready. Save them on an external drive, flash drive or DVD disk.

4) Backup all and any important files from your computer to a cloud service or external harddrive

5) Create recovery media for your current Windows install, if you have a OEM pc/laptop refer to the user manual or check the website of the manufacturer for how to create the recovery media for your device

(some people have been unable to use the rollback feature after upgrading to Windows 10)
