Didn't have coil whine a day ago and now I do?

I got a used 1070 the other day and bench marked it thoroughly on Uni engine valley.

I did the same benchmarks today and noticed a significant coil whine coming from the card, which wasn't there previously.

The same thing happened to my old 970 strix AND my gtx 760. Is it possible that my motherboard or PSu is damaging these new cards permanently.

It's really annoying and loud and it wan't there after I got it used so it wasn't the owner.

Unlikely from PCIE slot, so I suspect graphic card and PSU.

PSU

  • ■ If you know how to use multitester you can test each PCIE connector, you need good +12 volt from those not over not less.
    ■ check PEG connector for gunk, peeled or exposed cables, if it possible, borrow another PSU. Because it happens on other graphic cards, so I presume total PSU faulty.
1070

  • ■ if you lucky, could be just cooler fan, you can test it by unplugging 2 pin fan connector > remove fan (usually permanent attach to it shroud), power your PC go to BIOS, don't worry, BIOS page won't utilize much graphic card so it won't exceed save heat level.
    ■ If you still getting whine, then it's a VRM related, could be (mostly) deter inductors (chokes) after heavy OC.
I have EVGA GTX 780Ti with similar coil whine, I thought by using corsair AX series would solved the whine, it didn't, but I use it anyway, because I'm not using it for gaming (mostly GPU render engine solely) I thought it'll be solved by water cooling. it didn't, maybe on my sample, the rest of the chokes was suffice to make it work properly, let us know your progress.

Almost certain it's the motherboard as I have used two separate Ps's and the issue occured on both of them.

It has been the same on 3 Gpu's, but what is strange is that it didn't do it when I first got this card leading me to believe that the motherboard is frying every card I get.

Coils vibrate cause of KHz signal they produce, also yes sometimes pushing 500-600 fps trought the card can cause that issue or under load like benchmarks, I've fixed my RX480's coil whine (since 2 coils where not potted) by hot glue.

You can try RMAing if the coil is pretty bad (by bad i mean Audible).

No, but the issue was not there the previous day. It isn't 600fps it's at 100fps that it starts and its loud. it has to be the Mobo.

Just replace the motherboard, you seem pretty sure that PCIE slot is over current-ing your graphic card, what if turn out to be that after you install your graphic card the whine still persist? can you tell the different between coil whine and capacitor squeal?

As robert said, hot glue should help, the thing is, PCIE slot only bypassing max 75W from 24 pin atx (actual wattage always lower than 75 watt depend on the GPU VRM), so which mobo choke is whining?

Question from benwinwood6 : "Zotac amp extreme 1070 coil whine"

I purchased a Zotac 1070 used hand (impeccable condition only used for 3 months). When I First benched it there was no coil whine.

It now whines terribly at high fps. I replaced the Mobo to no avail.

The only thing I did was increas the power limit to 110% and the core clock by 5 and memory by 20. I was going to overclock further.

Do you think increasing the power limit could have damaged the card or caused the whine? I know it considered normal, but I like leaving cases open.
