I purchased a new mobo and cpu last week, MSI Z170A M7 Gaming and Skylake Intel Core i7-6700k processor, while putting it together I didn't properly put on my stock cpu cooler on tight enough. A week later while I was doing some diagnostics of my PC I realized my CPU was running at a really high temp of 100 degree Celsius even while idle. I quickly quit everything I was doing and fixed it, now its steady at 30 Celsius idle, havent tested while gaming.

My PC was probably on for a period of 3-7 hours a day for about a week before the fix. Did the lifespan of my new CPU greatly decrease? I know there was probably damage running at high temps for that long but did it cause serious damage to my CPU? I'm pretty worried because I just bought this and it cost alot.

Solution
If the CPU was starting to overheat, performance would have dropped like a stone and your PC may have shut down. These are safety measures designed to preserve the CPU. You haven't done any damage, so don't worry.

I assume you're using the stock cooler from a previous build as the 6700K doesn't include one?

thanks! I was really worried now I feel better. Yeah cooler was from a previous build, it worked really well with my old build so I didn't need to purchase a new one.
