Is there any way of knowing when your sims are about to die when they are
elders? Does the age bar show this?

Sort of. When the bar gets very close to the end, they are close to
dying. They usually die at 6 pm (age transition time)--but not always.
Sometimes, the bar recedes in a jump, indicating several more years of
life. The first set of ghosts I made, the sims died like clockwork
according to their total aspirations achieved. The story has been much
muddier ever since--sometimes well aspired sims die quite young
compared to others. If you are platinum, they seem to resist dieing
(at least, it seems that way to someone trying to get gold tombstones).
