Discussion Anybody have any actual numbers of how much a power supply degrades over time.

I'm still using a 10 year old Seasonic G series.
At one time I had a screen shot of how tight the power regulation was but that drive has been secured erased a few times.
I know they can be a bunch of variances because of power draw and temperature over the years along with part failures.
Just thought it would be very interesting as to how long you could actually use one.

It sounds like a question for Gamers Nexus or Hardwarebusters since they have testing hardware... I am sure we do too but they go more indepth
Yes but I would think they have never actually tested something like that or even thought to have a base line then let it run 10 years and retest.

JG might know something but he is out so.

EDIT I wish I still had my screen shot of the voltages from back then to compare to now after 10 years to see the difference.
Of course it would be missing things like holdup time and other things.

Also I have absolutely no clue how to ask them anything.

You know that's a good question. Most of the time we have upgraded long before our last systems power supply would have shown sighs of falling off. Not counting crap power supplies were talking quality one here.

I have a Antec 500 watt I used in 2004 -2009 now back in it's original box. Through the years if I have needed a filler tester she still works.

I'm a little more anal when it comes to electronics I always make sure they can breath dust free and keep them cool. Ya I'm that guy with a expensive something with a $20.00 box fan blowing on it.

The only power supplies I have ever had issues with were the early 2000 bare bone PC cases that had the bonus power supply.
One thing I do if I deal with something not used in a while is bring it up slowly on the variac.

When power supplies come up on the forum I'm so perplexed like maybe I'm missing something. Maybe it's I have gotten lucky and have always bought quality. And all still work.

One thing I have learned is Windows while your installing can sniff out a failing PS and have all kinds of install issues.

The only exceptions to cases coming with power supplies is the Antec years ago of course it's OEM was Seasonic if that is what your talking about.

The Antec was the first and last of that brand I bought, I got that at Fry's. I will say this I have 2 brand new Antec 450 watt supplies here than came as extras on a used parts buy. Pieces of junk.

The bare bone + power supplies were from Newegg, Geeks.com, Net sellers and one other local PC company that used to run ad's in Sunday paper in the calendar section. Can't remember there name ?
