Difference b/w physical and VMWare

What is the difference between an OS running in VMWare and in a physical system.Can we perform very thing in VMWare as updating,installation,gaming etc.

The VM can run a little slower, particularly with regard to 3D graphics. You can do anything with it that you can with a physical computer, but it's not good for gaming.
