Hello,

As the title may suggest I am looking for more information regarding the differences between an enterprise hard drive and a consumer hard drive. Specifically between the WD2000F9YZ and the WD2003FZEX. I am looking to use this in a computer at home, however considering the same price for the both items I was wondering which would be the better buy?

Thanks

Hey gamenflix. Those are two different types of drives. The WD Se is a drive designed specifically for datacenters and NAS environments. As for the WD Black - it is designed for high performance gaming rigs. Both have a dual processor which greatly optimizes performance, but they also have different features and technology used so that they perform better in the environment they're designed for. As @ingtar33 mentioned, they are tested differently as well, so that it is ensured, that they meet a high standard of quality for their intended use. But that doesn't mean that one is tested more than the other one, it just means that their performance has been tested for different types of environment.

Here are link to the drives you've mentioned so taht you can take a closer look at each of their features and compare them for yourself:

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

The WD2000F9YZ has two features that some might consider unsuitable, or even annoying, in a desktop drive.

One is Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER), and the other is a load/unload ramp.

Drives with ramps are often designed to autopark during idle periods, but I'm not sure if the WD2000F9YZ does this.

TLER is useful in a RAID (to stop drives from being dropped from the array), but might not be desirable in a desktop.
