Difference between gamepad and game controller

I was wndering after reading the wikipedia article on "input devices' whether there is a serious difference between the devices -gamepads and game controllers.

If there is, can i be enlightened about such difference(s)

Could not find much on this aspect on the net and images of the two did not do much to help either

Game controller is a category, whereas game pads are a sub-category, basically game pads are a type of game controller. Other game controllers include the light gun used for the game Duck Hunt. Hope this helps.
