Difference between KVR400X64C3AK2/1G and KVR400X64C3A/1G

i am trying to upgrade an old pc of a mate of mine and am having a problem trying to find some cheap memory.the motherboard in question is a gigabyte GA8IPE775 G.

KVR400X64C3AK2/1G and KVR400X64C3A/1G both appear to be compatible with this board but as it already has 2 sticks of KVR400X64C3A/512 running in dual channel i was hoping to keep these and add 2 more 1gb modules.

what would be the difference between the 2 different models of memory? and what would route would you recommend i take?

any information and/advice would be much appreciated

KVR400X64C3AK2/1G is a kit of 2 x 512MB modules. KVR400X64C3A/1G is a single 1G module; you need 2 for dual channel mode. I'd add 2 x KVR400X64C3A/1G if he wants 3GB of memory or 1 x KVR400X64C3AK2/1G if he only needs 2GB of memory or his budget is limited.

Assuming Windows XP then you really want 2GB of RAM minimum.

i should of said,i'm putting windows 7 ultimate on it also

Yeah sure if you can find the drivers to support Windows 7 Ultimate is a waste IMO. Either Windows 7 Pro or Home Premium...and then 4GB of RAM (4x1GB).
