Difference between p4 2 4 and dual core

Hello,
my Intel mother board 865gv has just died and i am wondering what to do with my p4 2.4 ghz socket 478 processor whether to go for new system or can i get the compatible MB I do surfing only

socket 478 has been long dead
the cheapest lowliest dual core (even Pentium D)
would blow it away.
what is your budget and where do you live?

If you are only surfing the system you have may be fine but anything you buy new will be in another league entirely.

It is obsolete by today's standards. It's not really worth it to rebuild a computer around that CPU.

You are better off building a newer computer. Even a Core2Duo E6300 1.86GHz CPU from 2006 can easily beat the old P4 2.4GHz CPU.

Thanks... I have decided to do away with P4 and took a look at a new system based on intel i3 540 with H55 MB which will cost $300 here in India. Please guide on GPU wether the inbuilt GPU of i3 is good enough or I have to spend extra on new card.
