There's a STRIX H270F GAMING locally to me for $40 without a box or anything, just the motherboard. I want to get it for living room controller gaming station because I have a spare i7 9700k because recently I upgraded my rig to i9. I checked CPU support and it's not listed there but they have the same socket, is it just the case of possibly updating the BIOS if it isn't? The list only goes up to i7 7700k https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-H270F-GAMING/HelpDesk_CPU/

No, completely incompatible. The socket used for Coffee Lake CPUs is not electrically identical to the socket used for Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs. That motherboard will only work with the latter CPUs.
