Difference when gaming between the 6700k and 6800k?

I'm pretty torn between getting the 6800k and the 6700k. I do like that the 6800k has more lanes. I'm going to be mostly gaming so It does make more sense to go with the 6700k, even though It does have better single core performance. And is there even a difference when gaming with the 6800k as opposed to the 6700k? Doesn't it really depend on the gpu more? (btw i will be playing at 1440p) When I view benchmarks comparing the two cpu's they are always almost identical give or take a couple of frames. When I build my rig I'm looking for something that will last me quite some time before I need to upgrade, but I will upgrade things such as storage and GPU.

Also, the price difference is very minimal. For my desired z170 motherboard + 6700k is about $60 less than a 6800k + desired x99 mobo. I just don't see a difference in gaming between them and won't games begin to use more than 6 cores anyway in the future? It just seems better to go with the 6800k even if I'm just gaming.

If all you're doing is gaming you probably won't see any difference using a 6800k. Most games don't take full advantage of all its cores. and the 6700k's better single core performance will be advantageous while gaming. You might as well go with the 6700k and save some money.

But won't games begin to start using multi core performance? And I really don't mind spending an extra $60 if it'll be more advantageous in the long run.

In 1440p they game the same. You should only be looking at the 5820k(not 6800k because it overclocks better and has a way better price/perf ratio) if you intend to stream and/or record. FOr pure gaming, the 6700k is the way to go. It has 8 threads so you are covered when games will start to use more than 4 threads.

Games won't need a 6800k before you need a new system. An i7 6700k is hard to push beyond 50% with games. It will be plenty, DX12 n all. What you should focus on is a good GPU and monitor with the money you save.
