Core 2 Duo means it was Intel's next generation architecture - more efficient. Since then they have had Sandy, Ivy, and are coming out with Haswell.

Core 2 Duo is a type of dual core processor, along with Pentium D, Pentium Dual core, i3s, some i5s, Athlon X2, Phenom X2, etc.
