hello, I want to build a workstation for 3d rendering and so forth.
I want to also "rent" it out for other people to use the power for their own usage.
I was looking at a 10 core Xeon E5-2670 v2 and putting it on a dual socket motherboard so I could upgrade later.
But I could also get a 16-core Opteron 6376 and put that on a dual socket motherboard for a much lower cost.
what would be the pros and cons of choosing either or these?
the Xeon would be $1,500 and give me 10 cores, 20 threads-
the Opteron would be $700 and give me 16 cores/threads
Once upgraded to a dual cpu setup, would the Operon (32 cores) or the Xeon (20 cores, 40 threads) be faster?
I want to do other things while it does work, so I would need a lot of ram... 64GB sound like enough?
I want to be able to use it while doing other things in the background- So I would need a lot of ram...can I jam non-ECC ram into these 2400/2600mhz ram into these as long as the mobo supports? or do these have limits?
EDIT: for the Xeon, I was looking at the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131861 or the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131817
For the Opteron...I don't know yet...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131643 ?
