Differences between similar AMD 64 chips

Hi all,

Just thinking about getiing myself a new PC.
I am considering building the system around a Gigabyte GA K8N Ultra 9 Socket-939 nForce4 Ultra PCI-E mother board.

My next choice is the processor.

There are 2 that fit my budget:

1) AMD 64 3800+ 512KB, ADA3800BPBOX
2) AMD 64 3700+ 1MB , ADA3700BNBOX

Now, which is the most beneficial, having an extra 100Mhz or half meg L2 extra?

I have not been keeping up to speed with this stuff - could someone explain/point me to where the difference would be in practical terms?

get the extra meg of cache then OC the extra 100Mhz

The extra 100MHz is the PR rating, not actual MHz.. You should list the real MHZ for those CPU, which should be around 2.2GHz.. Make sure that they are both the same socket.. the 3700+ with 1 meg might be socket 754... while the 3800+ might be socket 939 ..

thats if, they are the older newcastle cores, but venice and san diegos are all on s939... and the PR rating for s939 are consistent. i can see where you come from that the old s754 and s939 had a 200mhz difference in PR rating, but its consistent with the new revision. so if your getting a 3700 san diego or 3800 venice, it really depends. if you don't like to mess around too much, get the 3800 venice, if you can OC, go wtih 3700 and OC the crap out of it, these chips are over clockign monsters! people have been hitting 2800mhz+ consistently

Both are socket 939, and as such are compatable with the mother board I posted.

The 3800 runs at 2.4 Ghz
The 3700 @ 2.2 Ghz

Not really looked at OC anything before. Not really that interested either at the moment, but that is not to say I won't in the future.


Will probably go for the cheaper, the 3800 and look at OCing. In a year or so, I may go for a dual core when the prices are better.

PS where can I find about what type it is, i.e venice/winchester and so on. Plus, where can I find out about the differences between these charateristics?

The 3800+ would be faster but if u got clocking that 3700+ then it would fly by the 3800+
