Different Internet Speeds on PC and Laptop

Hi!

I have two computers, a PC and a Laptop. Both of them are connected to the router WIRED. Not wireless. I have 1000/200 Mbps internet from my ISP. The router is a medium one, TP-LINK TLWR1043 ND. Both cables are capable of 1000Mbps.

Both computers have i7, i7-6700HQ for laptop, and i7-4790K for desktop. 16GB RAM for both. Both motherboards have 1000Mbps network cards (integrated) obviously.

NO network using apps running in the background.

My problem is:
On my PC, speedtest always says 300-400, sometimes 500Mbps with 10-11 ms latency.
On my Laptop, speedtest always says 700-800Mbps with 2-3 ms latency.

Always.

First, I replaced the two cables, no change in results.
Then, I replaced the cables in the router ports, no change in results.
Then, I tried all of the ports, and all of the cables I found at my home, no change in any setups.
After all, I resetted all of my settings, netsh winsock reset catalog, netsh int ip reset, I updated the network card driver on my PC, restarted both of them, I updated the router firmware, and resetted it, re-tested, still no change in results.

VERY strange thing: When copying a 4GB file between the PC and the Laptop, the speed NEVER gets over 50-60MByte/s (which is 400-450 Mbps, like in the PC tests!!).
The copying is made between two very fast SSDs (500MByte/s write/read) so not the storage is the problem.

Both rigs are over $1000, and I'm expecting a total different problem, but I'm out of ideas.

This is strange. Is the speed test contacting the same server both times? Try fast.com and see if the speeds are similar. Also, you said both NICs has 1gbps cards. The one in the desktop, is the drivers coming from the motherboard site, or the vendor site? Again, this is strange. Did you try unplugging the laptop, and running the test independently?

The desktop drivers are coming from the motherboard site. And I tried this too when the desktop PC was the only one device in the network, others are disconnected.

No luck. As I wrote before, there is the speed reduction between the to computers too.
I'm guessing very hardly on my network card.

It sounds like that it could be the NIC. But I wanted to know if your speeds were increased when connecting directly to the modem. If it was increased, then we can focused on the router. Make sense?

Yep, it makes sense, i will do it soon. Now I try direct connection between PC and Laptop without router.

Day 2. I made a totally different test: Connected the two computers with one UTP cable directly. No router, No internet, Nothing else, and tried a copy between the two 500MByte/s SSDs in the two computers. SAME 400-500 Mbps speed, except of the 1gbps expected.
My PC's NIC is having problem. Should I buy a PCI one?

I did it, no luck. Some time before I could copy from the PC to the laptop by 1000mbps, this problem is only now exist.

I honestly don't think that the NIC is dying. If you are sure it should be able to handle 1Gbps connection, then it has to be a software issue. The reasons I say this is because it is consistent with the speeds. You can try safe mode with networking and make sure nothing is running. I'm sure you already updated the driver. If you are using CAT6 cables, that shouldn't matter either.

Dude. You are a god. I rebooted into safe mode with Internet, did a speedtest, and got extremely high speed, over 900mbps, which is perfect!

But in normal mode, if I close everything, I have still problem. Windows reinstall?

Do you have Windows 10? Open up Task Manager and check to see what is your your network. It may not be a server though, it could just be some software that is throttling your speed as well. And when I say software, I mean the one that came with the motherboard. I don't believe Windows' metered is causing the issue since it is a WiFi thing. But you can try to turn that off too.

In Windows 10, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Scroll down to Advanced Options and turn metered connection off

I did that, no luck. And I didn't installed anything from the mobo CD, only downloaded the NIC's newest driver from the manufacturer's page.

Is anything using the network right now? I OS Reset might be needed. Hate to say it, but some software is holding your speeds back. Not sure what it is though. you can try and install Glasswire (https://www.glasswire.com/) and see what could be eating it up.

Installed, running. Nothing above 60 kB/s, but I already using network speed metering tools, which say the same. (Without those, I got the same speed, so not they are the problem)

OK. Let's nuke and format C!

Well man, I honestly don't know man. I tried everything. Could be a background process. Not really sure though. If that OS reinstall doesn't doesn't work, then I can't say for sure what is causing the issue. At least we narrowed it down to a software and not hardware, which is kinda a good thing.

I reinstalled windows now, headed into speedtest.net instantly, and speeds are good now. :/ we will never know the problem.

That was a quick reinstall. Well, keep us posted of changes.

Okay, yep, its a very fast PC, i7-4790K, 250MByte/s readable Sandisk Extreme pendrive and ADATA SP900 550/530 Mbyte/s SSD. :)
