Different ram sizes

Hello, I have a question

I wanted to replace a 250 ram stick in my old acer travelmate 290 with a 1 gb stick.. until i discovered the slot wasn't of the needed size.

The stick i want to replace is about 6,9 cm long while the 1 gb one is 6,7 cm long.

Is this normal? I thought ram sticks and slots were universal.

Is there any way I can still stick the 1 gb ram in the slot?

if it doesnt fit you wont get it to fit.. (if that makes sense.) meaning that only DDR ram will fit in a DDR slot and DDR2 only in DDR2, and likewise for DDR3 and DDR4
and you wont be able to take full desktop sized ram and try to put it in laptop SDRAM or the other way around.

DDR,DDR2,DDR3 SODIMM is 67.6mm.
DDR4 SODIMM is 69.7mm.

None of them are compatible with each other.

Best to go to a ram web site such as Kingston.
access their ram upgrade app.
Enter the make/model of your laptop.
You will get a list of supported ram upgrades.
There are more important issues than size; you want all of them covered.
