Different types of VGA cables?

We have a few projectors here at work, and sometimes use different cables between them. I have just noticed that there are specific pins missing on some of the cables, and different cables have OTHER pins missing. Is there a certain type of cable for certain types of devices? I've always thought VGA was VGA, but now I'm not so sure. I've done a lot of googling about this but so far haven't found what I'm looking for. Can somebody explain to me what the missing pins are for? And if there is potential danger in swapping between types of cables.

Not very many of the pins have video on them. Most are for shielding, those would be grounded. Cable makers have some latitude in deciding how many, and which, grounding pins they'll use.
