basically if you're looking to buy one simply read the description of the product. most of the time "active" is stated in the title of the adapter or at least in the description. if it's not specifically stated, then move on to another option until it states outright it is an "active" adapter.

All adapters HDMI to VGA are active. Passive adapters are not possible. If someone sells passive HDMI to VGA adapter, then it's fake product.
