Hi Everyone,

I run a small computer repair business, been in business over 3 years now, and I've never had this much of a problem with a system. The client called and said she couldn't connect to the internet and thought it might be the ethernet cable. Once she brought me the system and the cable in question, it became apparent it was not the cable. The Networking icon on the taskbar displayed the yellow exclamation mark and Windows Diagnostic reports "invalid ip configuration".
In the process of trying to determine why this error was happening, the system behaved as if the HDD might be failing and after a reboot I got a POST error saying no HDD or boot device detected. I removed the drive and dropped it in my test system and got nothing, but now it works OK other than 4 Prefailure warnings. Replaced the drive with a brand new one, installed Windows 8, and still no joy on the wired internet connection. It works fine using my wireless usb adapter for my router so I started updating Win 8, updated the drivers using Driver Booster Pro, and installed the runtimes. But, when it came time to update to 8.1, the installation failed, and still no luck with the wired connection. I've flashed the BIOS to latest version, got the couple of drivers available off the Gateway website and started a clean install again with a different Windows 8 installer. Same results after the new install. Not having the slightest idea what the problem is, I used TuffTest Lite to test the MOBO and it passed all tests. Now I'm even more confused as to what the issue is. Does anyone have any suggestion at all what the problem might be? Speccy report copied below, if you need more, please ask and I'll post it right away. Thanks in advance, you guys are great!!!!!!!!

Have you tried testing with a different LAN card? The on board one may have a damaged pair pin or something within the Ethernet socket.

As for the installation issues, I would be skeptical about using "Driver Booster Pro" as it might have found incompatible drivers for some of the hardware. Your better attempting to get the specific drivers for the components from the manufacturers websites yourself.

So check the network capability with a different LAN card or USB to LAN adapter to rule out OS network fault. And thus prove that the on board Ethernet socket may be to blame.

Then possibly reformat and get all the drivers separately so that you know they are all the correct ones. Try and stay away from third party "time saving" driver tools etc.

i agree that it sounds like the network port has simply died. it happens pretty regularly in reality, especially with pre-built systems that use cheap parts. as noted above, try a pci/pcie network card and that should solve the problem pretty easily. they are cheap and something i tend to keep on hand for just these cases since it happens often enough. i bought a dozen or so earlier this year on clearance for like $5 each since i knew i'd need them eventually :)

i'd personally only spend a short amount of time and quickly drop in the pci card. once the wifi works and such, i'd just assume it's the network card and drop in a pci one and move on. simple, cheap for the client and saves a lot of headaches like you have now.

sounds like you have explored all other options already and just need to accept it is the nic port and move to the next job!
