Difficulty installing new RAM

I'm having issues installing ram on a fairly old PC. The system takes only DDr2 and it had only a single 1 GB module installed.


Now the problem comes when i tried to install an additional 2 GB dimm. It doesn't seem to fit completely in the middle, as i can barely see a bit of the pins around notch in the middle, while the sides are completely in. I also had to move the clips manually as i inserted the ram to lock it properly. It didn't just snap in. It's probably too old



I don't know if this is really gonna give problems, because the PC boots just fine and it detects all the ram.

What is your new stick? Could it be that you got a DDR3 instead of another matching DDR2?

The new stick is DDR2 so there shouldn't be a compatibility problem.

See if there is anything in the slot such as dust clumps and clean it out. There could just be something blocking it.

Well i will have to try later, because the can of compressed air i had seems to have just ran out. The socket doesnt look dirty though.

May just be a stick that is off a hair, or you may have an overly tight DRAM slot if you have to lock it in manually, these show up every once in awhile, if running and booting OK you are prob fine

Sorry for the delays on any updates. I cleaned it all, and it was still not fitting properly.


Now, i haven seen any problems showing on normal use. But i did try some applications and games, and i noticed that the screen freezes and unfreezes constantly on menus and gameplay. Tried several games, and it only seems to have this freezing problem on 3d stuff. Im not sure if it has to do with the RAM or if it's something else.

Most likely it is the video card in this case. However when you get the budget I suggest upgrading and building new.

The weird thing is that without the RAM i get no video problems. But a memtest on it shows no errors.

Memtest only detects for ram failures it does not test the speed of the ram. Also ram does not effect games as much as the video card does.
