Default is Normal. You only get an XP penalty on Novice.

Thanks. I was doing the config stuff and I had to choose a level, and I
didn't want to pick the wrong one.

I would recommend Core rather than Normal, though. Frankly it's more
fun IMHO, without being too difficult.

On core, your characters can be permanently killed, requirind a reload
to bring them back to life instead of a resurrection. You can also fail
at scribing spells, which also requires a reload as the rest of the game
assumes that you have most of the available spells. Enemies also do
full damage. On normal, your characters are never killed permanently,
you never fail to scribe spells, and enemies do 75% of their normal damage.

On Normal difficulty, party members take only 75% damage from anything
that may damage them, cannot permanently die, gain maximum hit points on
leveling up, and automatically succeed in writing scrolls to spellbooks.

On Core difficulty, certain effecs, such as Disintegrate or being
reduced to -10 hit points, destroy a party member's body beyond any hope
of resurrection. Hit points for each level are randomly rolled. There
is a percentage chance, depending on the wizard or bard's Intelligence,
that each scroll the caster attempts to copy to a spellbook will fail
and be destroyed.

Hmm, that actually sounds more interesting than Normal. In BG1, I know
that it was possible to die permanently and to fail at scribing a
scroll. I don't know about enemey damage though (but taking only 75%
seems silly).

Are there any other changes that Core Rules does? If it doesn't make it
too difficult, I might start the game with that, instead of Normal. I
suppose I could always set it back to Normal if I need to, without an XP
penalty, right?

Yes, in BG1 the default difficulty was the equivalent of BG2 Core Rules.

Right. You only get an XP penalty on Novice.

Ah, well in that case, it won't be a problem at all! I'm glad I asked
first, thanks again.

So its really how often do you want to reload )
Missing out on some spells does make it more realistic/fun but when its an
important spell it can be a bit annoying. Not getting max hp may matter less
then with lvl 1-7 characters, but still a pain, and once you start reloading
you may as well go normal.

That was what I felt. I wouldn't reload simply to get more hp, but I
always reloaded in BG1 if I lost a spell scroll or if someone was
'gibbed'. Setting the game to Normal in BG2 just achieved the same
result more efficiently.
