digicam recommendations

Well, my sony digital8 camcorder died on me a few weeks ago. (DCRTRV-120)
It actually still works and tapes it just wont be recognized when connected
to my computer by the firewire port. Of course my warranty ran out so I
took it to CircuitCity for an estimate and they wanted $1300 to fix it!
Needless to say I'm getting a new one instead. This is what I need:

1. I dont need all the bells and whistles. Just a good digital8 (is Sony
the only one that makes digital8?) or MiniDV camcorder. I really dont want
to spend more than $500.

2. The best thing I liked about my TRV-120 is that it could be used as an
analog to digital converter. I could pass an analog signal into it from a
VCR etc. and capture in digital format. This is really the one feature that
I want again more than anything. SOny has a new model the DCRTRV-460 that
does all that I was just wondering if there were any other ones I should be
looking at also.

I have a barely-used top-end Sony D-8, the TRV740
with megapixel CCD, available at:

While this is more money than you want to spend, the
image quality is better than what is available now in D8.

Have you tried going to Sony for the repair? I think they have a
fixed-price scheme that costs much less than the above quote.

$1300 sounds to me like highway robbery. Perhaps the person you
spoke to misplaced the decimal point 🙂

I agree, a new base model D8 is only $500.

Have you consided capturing your video analogue instead? You can get a
canopus ADVC50 capture card for under $200.

Pretty much, only Sony supports it. Hitachi I think also makes D8,
but I'd guess they are using Sony parts.

The repair cost seems like a bit much -- the firewire port failure
is likely in the electronics board, nothing mechanical. OTOH -- it
could be the firewire cable, not the port.

The 460 is the current top of the line D8, and it seems like it
would do what you want. As well, you could use your current camera to
tape, then use the new one to transfer via firewire. The current
lower end (there are only two levels) model won't do the video
passthrough, play Hi8/Video8, or take stills.

The only better alternatives are finding an older model -- 740 or
340 or similar -- used at a good price. The older ones have a larger
CCD than the newest models, which cuts into low light sensitivity
somewhat -- but the new ones are more compact.
