i just ordered the Professional 64 bit version from win741.com. if anyone else has ordered from there, how long did it take them to ship the disk to you? i could download the .iso, doesn't take long but i can't burn it on a DVD since i'm on an old school PC (it doesn't even have a CPU cooler, ballin.. my laptop broke :/ i might just go over my uncles house and download from there and burn it from his laptop.

thanks again. oh that install will work on a pc without a pre-existing OS right? thats what others have said on here, i just want to confirm it though.

As far as I know the Digital River's student version is what everyone got whether from 741 or "direct" from Microsoft via student discounts...
The disks should arrive shortly, 4-7 days for shipping maybe longer depending on courier.

You cannot install it on a PC without a pre-existing Windows XP or Vista version with a valid key.

The only way to install it on a blank hard drive is if you create an image from the disc, replace a few files having to do with bootloader and install it that way.
BE WARNED THIS METHOD GOES DIRECTLY AGAINST USER END TERM AGREEMENT, AS WELL AS Digital Millennium Copyrights Act which is a law by the way (DMCA)
Im not trying to scare you, just trying to avoid giving bad advice. Obviously you want to follow legal methods by purchasing Windows 7.

but are you sure on the second part? since there was a topic a while back with people having the same question as me. they emailed DR and got replies saying it's the full version and you could install on a blank HDD.

Not sure where they got that email from in terms of student version, but as far as I know the Digital River is an upgrade version. It is often called a full version because it is the upgrade retail version which still requires a previous OS installed. I will do a test later today at work, I will attempt to install W7 on a blank hard drive. I will post the results.

If this JessicaD is a legit Microsoft staff member, then there is your answer. I will do the test anyways since I have idk how many spare computers at the moment.

You can perform a clean install from a Windows 7 upgrade version however you will have to have a valid previous copy of Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista installed to validate the upgrade and activate the product key. Please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

hm.. after re-reading that thread, i'm kind of worried. since the only people who said it has worked for them are the people that ordered from the MS Store. if u ordered from DR, can u confirm it worked without a pre-existing OS? if the disk fails, i might just try with a flash drive.

on the email when i ordered w7 it says " Product Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade - 64 bit"

hmm, i sent in two emails. one from that person (the first email from that person was an email telling me how it's an OEM version.. yeah..not my question) the first guy had no idea what he was talking about, so i just ignored him. i'm starting to not believe half these people, since they told me i ordered 32 bit pro, while i clearly ordered 64bit pro. i'm gonna take the gamble, UNLESS i can cancel the order and get a refund..
