Dim 4300 boot devices

I had to replace the HDD in a Dimension 4300 system and decided to
install a RAID PCI card with 2 HDDs setup as RAID 1. The card is an
EIO DM-8401R. My problem is getting the system to boot from the RAID
array. The RAID setup and the initial part of the XP installation went
fine, but it failed to reboot. The BIOS shows only 3 boot device
options: FDD, HDD and CD-ROM, even after flashing it to A06. In the
card setup the RAID array is marked as bootable. How can I get this
machine to boot from the RAID?

Most HDD controller cards have their own BIOS. Have you tried disabling the
HDD in the system BIOS - because there is no hard drive connected to the
system board IDE controller.....

Thanks but yes I've tried that. The effect is that the HDD entry in
the boot sequence menu now has "(not installed)" after it, and the
system still fails to boot from the RAID.

Then the next question would be did you install the RAID card drivers when
prompted at the beginning of the XP install?

Yes, I did. And it was the latest, freshly downloaded.

Does the card have a boot BIOS on it? Not all add-in cards -- SCSI, ATA,
etc. do. If it doesn't, you will not be able to boot from it.

In the original post I mentioned that the array is marked as bootable
in the card setup.

If the system won't see the card in the list of boot devices, try a
different PCI slot for it. If that doesn't work, and you want to boot,
you'll have to try a different RAID card.

The system sees the card, because it announces itself, lists the
drives attached to it, and offers the chance to go into its setup,
after the m/b POST. So I don't think moving it to another slot will
help. But I guess I should start thinking about another card anyway.
