We've got a dell dimension xps r450. Sometimes, when it boots, it
doesn't recognize the rwdvd or rwcd players. When this happens, it also
doesn't recognize the audio cards.

Was wondering what might be causing this and how to fix it.

Thanks.

You said sometimes so what do you do to fix it for the next time? I
guess it could be several things but I'm tempted to look at the device
manager / related drivers when this occurs just for starters unless
you can tell us more relevant information.

My wife's got a Sony Vaio (Her idea, not mine). Believe it, or not,
a dirty CD lens will cause the system to not recognize the unit.
Clean the lens, and the CD's back in the "recognized" list.

Sorry, no idea about the audio card.

Given the age of the computer, I wonder if the CD-ROM drive is failing. Also,
some older CD-ROM drives had trouble reading CDs burned with a CD burner.

I had similar problem with an XPST
I found that it was because of the BIOSconfiguration. In the EIDE 1section
the drive should be quoted AUTO instead of NONE
