Hi guys,

i bought a second hand modular hx650 corsair power supply off craigslist.
It works but it is extremely loud. (Jet engine loud)

Has anyone tried wiring in a diode on the fan circuit to reduce the fan speed?
Thanks

Solution
I believe that it's a resistor rather than a diode. I use one to reduce the fan speed slightly, and the noise significantly, of the case fan in one of my computers. Obviously you would monitor CPU and system temperatures after doing this; it can be a very effective way of silencing a computer.

I'VE FOUND THE ANSWER. I LOOSENED THE POWER SUPPLY SCREWS A LITTLE AND THE FAN IS SILENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS GUYS! ALL ARE APPRECIATED!

Lol - It turns out my psu screws were too tight. I loosened them and the psu fan noise is gone!

"Sounds" like you found your answer. Tight screws on some builds can yield the motor to vibrate other components and possibly rub up against, thus creating your 'noise'. However, for anyone wanting to reduce the speed or provide more control over your fan, a 1/4W variable resistor will work great. The resistance would depend on the fan, however, a 100-Ohm variable resistors should fit most occasions.
