Yes, of course that discussion has taken place on numerous levels
and at numerous times.
Diplomacy World comes out of the Postal hobby, and indeed is now
over 30 years old. And it still is produced in a "paper" format
as well. You can subscribe to it postally, as many do. WHile
the DIplomatic Pouch is purely a web szine, and comes out of the
judge based Dip hobby. This is the most fundamental difference
between them, and will always be the most important difference
between them.
THere are other more subtle differences as well that have evolved,
and probably can change depending on who is doing the editing....
some of them are:
1) Diplomacy World has tended to run "Showcase" games (as Unicorn
that you are playing in right now is supposed to be...) whereas,
the Pouch has never run games.
2) FTF Diplomacy has tended to be covered more extensively in
Diplomacy World, though this varies. We're preparing a number
of special features on July's World DipCon for Diplomacy World,
it wouldn't shock me if Dip Pouch had little or nothing on that.
3) Dip Pouch has been more aggressively focused on "Newbie articles"
and advicefor the beginner, in the last Diplomacy World Edi Birsan
had an article on teaching Dip to newbies, but it was FOCUSED
on very experienced players and how they can get the game across
quickly to a new player. Many Pouch articles are designed for that
new player to read directly.
4) Dip Pouch historically has not had as much "related, but non
game direct" content as Diplomacy World, and Diplomacy World
has tried harder to be explicitly international (e.g. I've
interviewed people from Finland to New Zealand in my interview
feature), though it has often failed at that.
5) Most people hear about the Pouch here in r.g.d while most
people hear about Diplomacy WOrld through the postal subbers,
or through the 500 or so person E-Mail subscriber list.
Generally, most authors find it VERY easy to choose which outlet
is more appropriate for their intended audience, except when
one or both outlets are in hiatus. Diplomacy World JUST got
really rolling again this year, just as the Pouch was pretty
much absent.
I think this discussion and competition helps, but I'm an economist
so you might think that idea is congenital.
