DIR 655 access point activation disconnects me from internet

Hi all,

I'm having major issues using my dlink DIR-655 as an access point in my home network. Basically, whenever I turn on the the 655, I can no longer connect to the internet. For some reason, I can't connect to either of my routers either.

My home network basically looks like this:

ATT -> 2Wire router (ATT provided) -> DIR 655 (AP configured)

I configured my 655 as an access point following this guide: https://blogs.oracle.com/simonthorpe/entry/configuring_a_dlink_dir_655_as

Basically, I set the IP address of the 655 to 192.168.1.253 (the 2Wire is 192.168.1.254) and disabled DHCP and any other services that might interfere with IP allocation, including SPI, Firewall, UPnP, etc. I also set the 655 to wireless channel 6 and the 2Wire to channel 1.

I set the SSID of the 655's wireless network to be the same as the 2Wire's network. Then I plugged an ethernet cord into port 1 of the 655 and turned it on.

Everything works fine for up to 30 minutes, but after that I get a notification saying I'm not connected to the internet. I tried to ping both of the routers but can't get a response from either one, and I can't access them from my browser either.

I have no idea why this is happening, especially when so many people seem to have been able to use this setup successfully already. Any help would be appreciated.

And you set that 655 static address in the 2Wire static table using the MAC address of the 655?

And the 2Wire DHCP range upper limit is less than 192.168.1.253?

I have not set the static address in the 2Wire - I'll do that now.

The 2Wire's own IP address is 192.168.1.254, so I assume the limits are from 1.0 to 1.254. Should I change this?

EDIT: The range is actually from 1.63 to 1.253. I'm not sure how to set the static tables on the 2Wire router, however. I'll keep trying. Should I change the IP assigned to the 655 outside the range of the 2Wire router?

Do not use x.0 or x.255 ever on a /24 network -- they are required for other stuff. Sure, you can just use 192.168.1.62 for the 655.

The 2Wire manual should have a section on setting up a static address on the LAN in the 2Wire static route table.

What is the model number of your 2Wire?

It's the i38HG.

I haven't been able to find anything on how to set up a static address on the 2Wire router.

Could the issue be caused because I'm using the same SSID for both routers?

I've also found that "The i38HG is not the router, that is only a break-out box that converts HPNA over twisted pair to 4 Ethernet interfaces plus a wireless access point. The router itself is the i3812V (the iNID), which is outside your house."

"There is no true bridge mode on the 2Wire routers. However, you can still configure it such that almost all functions of your own router will work properly."

Unfortunately to do this, I have to configure the DIR-655 to receive its IP from my 2Wire's DCHP, but there's no setting to enable this on the 655, so apparently this solution won't work either. Found the info here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23483245#23483245

EDIT: I found the page, and I made sure to set 192.168.1.253 to static and disabled the firewall to that address. The network seems to be working right now, but this happened before and then imploded shorty afterwards. I'll keep this thread updated.

The configuration's stopped working again. I checked the 2Wire's settings and the firewall was enabled again, and now I can no longer disable it for the 655. It says that "it is not allowed to disable the firewall for this device."

I can no longer access the 655's admin page on my network either. I have absolutely no idea what to do at this point, aside from buying a new router that can receive an IP address from a DHCP.

Any help would be appreciated.

Start at the beginning and work the problem. Disconnect the DIr-655 and reset the the 2Wire.

Then get the 2Wire working first before you add the next level of complexity, the 655.

I would do a reset on the 655 so that you can reset all the settings -- so reset by pushing the small reset button on the back and then connecting with a wired connection to the default values (IP, user, password) and then you have to reconfigure all the things that you need to do to get the 655 set as an AP. The first few hundred times are the hardest, but I still write down every setting that I want to change before starting and then tick them off one at a time as I do them.

It is very unlikely that you need to buy anything, you just need to patiently work the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I've tried almost every combination of settings I can think of, but I keep running into the same problem. Namely, the 655 seems to disconnect itself from the network or is blocked by the 2Wire, not sure which.

I've reset the 655 something like 20 times to start from scratch, but I may have missed something.

I'll go ahead and try to do the entire thing over again by resetting the 2Wire. Hopefully that'll work.

Yes, as I said you need to have the 2Wire working perfectly before you add the 655. Then add it as a static address outside the DHCP range but still in the network on the 2Wire and use the same static address in the 655. The rest is all just setting up the 655 wireless settings.
