I have a problem. My router is plugged into my cable modem, then giving wifi to all the house. Seeking faster download speeds for a large download, I directly plug my laptop into the cat5e cable coming from the modem. and it doesnt work. I turn the modem on then off, unplug it then plug it back in, and it still doesnt work. I run windows network diagnostics, and it tells me that my IP configuration is invalid and it couldnt fix the problem. so i plug the router back in and use the wifi to ask this question. Please help me figure out what im doing wrong!

Your modem could require PPPoE connection, so you have to check with your ISP, and set up your laptop in a way similar to your router.

If you have access to your router, check how its WAN interface is configured.
Turning the modem on and off normally works. What you can do is look in the router and find the mac address as well as the IP address being assigned. Then go into your PC and set static IP. The mac address is a little more tricky but almost all ethernet cards you can manually set the mac it is normally hidden in the driver settings in the same place you see it talk about duplex and speed and such. It has a number of different names depending on the vendor of the nic chips but it should be fairly obvious.

If this doesn't work I have no clue. The modem should not be able to tell that you are not actually the router.

Unless you have a older crappy router you should be able to get the same speed plugging into the lan ports and bypassing the router.
