I was recently in the situation where my machine wasn't using the MPEG2
filter that I wanted and I needed to fix it. Sometimes it would just
cause media player to crash, or other filters would work slower than
what I was used to.

The combination of GSpot and this tool helped out tremendously:

(RadLight Filter manager)

I've used DXMan before, but this one has many more features.

I would recommend you using the RadLight player
(http://www.radlight.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=655) which actually
lets you select preferred decoders for specific media types. No need
to play with merits :)
