Hi All, just installed Windows 10 Free upgrade on the 29th as they promised. But after running dxdiag I'm still seeing DirectX 11.2, AND not DirectX 12 as promised...any ideas? CPU is and AMD A10-6800K with built in GPU AMD Radeon HD 8670D. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

After some research I found out why DirectX 12 wasn't installed when I installed my free upgrade to Windows 10. Basically my APU A10-6800K with integrated HD 8670D doesn't support DirectX 12, so out of luck there, won't be riding that gravy train. So will be upgrading to the Radeon R9 270 which does support it. Here is a handy URL which explains which graphics systems support DX12, and which ones don't, if anyone else is having the same problem:

Thanks again guys for your suggestions and help!
Your GPU needs to support DirectX 12, or DirectX 12 Ready Card.If your GPU supports it, then Windows Updates should automaticly install DirectX 12 capable driver.

Thanks Pumpkin Pie, I suspected something like that, although I would have thought that since beta versions of Windows 10 and DirectX 12 have been out for a while now, the big guys like AMD and Nvidia would have been able to create drivers/updates that implement DirectX 12 for GPUs which they are still selling. I hear DirectX 12 gives a significant boost to graphics performance.

It does give a boost. With every newer version, the manufactorers can make them lighter, more powerful, less demanding and easier to use.

It could be the case that when my CPU/GPU (AMD A10-6800K with built in GPU AMD Radeon HD 8670D) were developed, the coding/specs for DirectX 12 wasn't available yet, so Windows 10 chose the highest possible version of DirectX (11.2 in my case) that the GPU could run with.

I guess only AMD could confirm this, I'll sign up for one of their forums and try to find out. It would be a shame though not to be able to take advantage of the performance boost offered by DX12, since I don't have a high performance GPU to begin with. I'll shortly be upgrading to a Radeon R9 270, which I hope will be able to implement DX12...
