I updated to DX 9.0b temporarily when I first bought UBI Software's XIII, at which time I noticed screen freezes and lockups in ALL my games running the Unreal Tech Engine (Unreal II, UT2003, XIII, Clancy's Rainbow 6-3). I reset my machine to DX 8.1 and all of the problems went away. I'm left wondering which of my components are not DX 9.x compatible. Is there a way to find out?

Please Note, My machine is in need of updating, I'm currently running a P3 1GHz on a Tyan Trinity 400-VIA Apollo Pro 133A, 512 PC133, I did update all of my hardware to the most current drivers recently, Nvidia 56.64 - GeForce2 Mx400 64Mb, Creative SB Live! 5.1 5.12.2.252 (I suspect this device could be the culprit, just a hunch, however there is nothing I could find on the Creative site to clue me in to any hardware problems the Live! cards may have with DX9.) VIA 4in1 4.51 for VIA Apollo Pro 133.

Majority Answer? Upgrade?

I think the obvious problem You do - you install latest nvidia drivers :)
I bet there's a big chance when you uninstall current and install older for instance 30.82 version or even 28.32 you will get rid of the problem...
You'll profit not only in reducing the problems but also a little in performance - try to run 3dmark2001 on various drivers -you will see -to generalize-the older the faster

It's not only my experience-I read nvidia optimizes the detonators only for new cards, so the latest release is for geforce FX 5999 or sth :)), I guess.

IF it does not help, it may be a directx issue, but even gf4ti is not fully dx9 compatible -so it's not the correct way of finding the problem, I think

For GF 2 or GF256 (mine:) older detonator is really better, on my computer for example, q3arena does really not look fine on latest drivers :)

and to sum up-anything can happen and every week you'd better buy new machine :) with PCI express card of course..what if the agp won't be dx10 compatible?? :D
regards!

I agree, its likely the nVidia drivers. BI have one system running the GF2 GTS, and find I get good performance from the 44.03 drivers.

The soundblaster Live shouldn't be an issue, I have one installed and have never had any problems with it.

Change your video card drivers and see if that helps.

You barely meet the recommended system requirements for these games with DX9. Don't be surprised if it hangs from time to time!
