directx compatible display adaptor required

I was able to play max payne 1 on my computer with windows xp pro sp3. When I upgrade my computer to windows 7 ultimate, I can't play. When i run game, it says 'directx compatible display adaptor required'.
Directx installed on my computer.
Please help.

Windows 7 ultimate x86
pentium 4 2.80ghz
768 mb ram
no graphic card

You most likely haven't installed the manufacturer's Windows 7 graphics driver which means the existing driver is just the default basic driver which doesn't support DirectX.

Install the Windows 7 graphics driver for your PC model and you should be okay. You can download the driver from your PC maker's website (provided they support Windows 7 on that model).

You need to upgrade the RAM in your computer, running Windows 7 on a system with under 2 gig of RAM, especially on a P4 CPU will make it extremely slow, especially if you want to play games. For under $100 you should be able to find a used Core 2 Duo system with 2 or more gig of RAM.

Good point hang-the-9, I hadn't noticed the OP's RAM specs. Definitely not enough.
