Disabled iPod Touch - anyone know of a way to get into it?

My niece found her old iPod Touch and thinks she has some pictures on it. At some point she tried to get back into it, and not remembering the password she locked it. Apple says the only way to do anything with it is to put it into recovery mode, which will delete everything. Does anyone know of any other possible way to access it without erasing everything?
