is it ok if i turn off the C state in BIOS. i only want it because I think my PSU is not Haswell certified & is thus giving me random shutdowns in IDLE state.
what are the pros & cons, if i disable it ?

Solution
It could be faulty too. But why not have a look at your bios first? Which bios is installed? Before 1.2, the CPU was not supported, that's fact. The c-state can be disabled in bios too, if the PC still shuts down in idle. After these steps, I would consider the psu faulty. At this moment, all possibilities could be true.

If you disable c-states, a non haswell ready psu would work without problems, that's pro

Contra is that the CPU will use more power in idle, but if you wouldn't need to buy a new psu, that's ok.

intel core i5 4690k
Kingston 8 gb ram
MSI z97 gaming 5
Antec tp-750
keep in view that the PSU is a 2nd hand unit(maybe 2-3 years old). all other componets are new & a year old

Also, the random sgutdowns only occur when i browse the internet, watch movies & youtube.
they have NEVER occured in games like GTA V, The Division etc

are u sure !?
'coz a lot of people are saying, its the PSU thats faulty

that still doesn't solve the problem, i guess i'll have to wait to get enough money to get a gold rated PSU
one more thing, the PSU thats giving me shutdowns is a 2nd hand unit. i replaced it with a a spare Corsair 550w PSU. & it seems to be working fine in normal usage, only ths time, the Corsair PSU is not capable to handle my Strix GTX 970 in heavy games.
so i am convinced that the problem lies in the PSU.
what do u say ?

i don't think the BIOS update is needed, i mean i have been using this PC for 2 years & the only issue i've encountered uptil now is that of the PSU; this is the 2nd time i'll have to replace the PSU

Corsair vs550

i used this PSU for 6 months b4 buying the GTX 970. When i installed the gtx 970, it worked fine for2-3 months until it started to give me PC shutdowns in games like GTA V, the Division, Black Ops 3 etc
other than that, my PC works fine in normal usage such as internet browsing, movies, streaming, etc
the problem only occur in games wid this PSU

i'll check it....

i've checked the BIOS version, u were asking.
its 1.8
