Disappointing AMD T-Bird Overclock :(

Greetings all!

I recently purchased an AMD Thunderbird 1.2Ghz (Axia batch), along with an Asus A7A266 mobo, and 256MB of Corsair 300Mhz DDR SDRAM.

After reading many posts, I expected to achieve between 1.4 & 1.5GHZ by overclocking. I went out and purchased a conductive pen to close the L1 bridges, (to unlock the cpu), and was surprised to discover the L1 bridges were already closed! They were obviously closed by the manufacturer - this was not a case of a reseller attempting to close them. Anyways, I am unable to change the multiplier in bios. I select "Manaual" but the multiplier is fixed at 9. The only way I can Overclosk is to bump the FSB. I am currently running at 1313MHZ (9 x 146. If I increase the FSB any further I get lockups. The motherboard is set to jumper free mode. I am pissed because I bought all the toys for overclocking - Thermalright heatsink/fan, Arctic Silver 2, Enermax 350 Watt P/S, extra case fans, along with an Asus Geforce 3 Deluxe, and an IBM 27GB Deskstar 75GXP.

Any ideas on how to unlock this cpu? I am scared to manually close other bridges to a specific cpu speed in case of instability. I would much rather do this in bios.

Any input appreciated!

Thanks!

Did you increase core voltage to 1.85V?
That can give you a little bust.

Also, AXIA's 1.2 don't go very far. Most can't go
over 1.4GHz.

Do re-sellers do that?

Joe most axias can hit 1.5 with decent cooling. The chart on athlonoc explains it all. As for his question, are you sure the motherboard allows clock multiplier adjustments, many amd760 first gen boards do NOT.

Same here. When i bought my CPU 1.TBIRD 266 FSB (AXIA) my bridges were connected already (engineering sample i guess) my voltages are up to 2.04 now and i can only overclock it up 1410 (141X10), it runs stable with this except on prime95 🙁 at 1380(138X10) i can finish or rather i dont hang up with prime95(since prime95 isnt suppose to end its torture test!)
My SYSTEM:
Athlon TBIRD 1.2 266 FSB overclocked at 1.410 (141X10)
Mini Super ORB Heatsink and Fan
EPOX8k7a ( to be changed to EPOX8k7a+ raid )
128 X 2 DDR ram (Nania Chipset)
SBLIVE 5.1
ASUS V7100
Maxtor 40 gig
Seagate 10 gig
PLEXTOR 16x10x40
Sony 50X
Generic Floppy
Surecom 10/100 Lancard
350 watts power supply
A lot of fans! (with good airflow)

Its time to pause for a beer.. CHEERS!

LoL, the reason you cant get your cpu any faster is that [-peep-] heatsink, get a good one and you will hit 1.5 like a true jedi master! A note on voltage increases, my 1.33 runs at 1.5 at STOCK VOLTAGE! If you dont have to increase voltage for stability DONT! Many overclockers increase the core voltage to max BEFORE they try to overclock, this just creates needless heat, in fact, if running at stock, run your voltage as low as it will go while maintaning stability. This lowers temps and makes for a cooler computer, remember kids, a cool computer is a happy computer.

PS: all axia cpus come unlocked from the factory(at least I have never heard of one which didnt) AMD unlike intel is not stingy with the overclocking community.

Matisaro, you're crossing the line from "enthusiast" to "fanatic". Don't attack people that purchase AMD just because they weren't as lucky as you. You should know that Overclocking is a crap shoot, and you just got lucky. The important thing is that these people purchased AMD, and are likely to purchase AMD in the future.

Not all axias come unlocked, and yeah, you were a bit heavy handed, not all cpu's will go up that easily, my other 1 gig would do 1300 straight off (13 x 10), this one struggled which is one of the reasons why I did this
However, the hsf may well be one of the limiting factors here, I'd agree that you should start with the stock voltage and gradually increase it if you become unstable, but I thing you are doing ok, specially with an orb.
I had to mod my board to get over 1.85V 🙁

After reading my post I could see how people thought I was attacking him, however I did not intend to attack anyone, I was attacking the heatsink. I apologize if anyone took it the wrong way.

Where I get my stufforz most of the time, they told me that all Athys 1200 and above are unlocked for now.....

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

(I knew something had to be goin on when I was 2 for 2 on these.......)

Thank You AMD!
