My Specs - cpu: amd fx8350
ram: 8gb kingston hyperX
mobo: asus m5a78lm plus
gpu: xfx r9 270x
os: windows 8.1
display: sceptre 40" x405bv-fhdr hdtv (native resolution 1920x1080p)
My Problem -
Purchased a big hdtv for use with the computer because I do a lot of movie/video/gaming and it's nice to have something large to watch on for myself/friends/family. The tv has 3 hdmi ports and a vga port among others. At first, I used the vga port with a dvi->vga adapter that I had laying around from previous video card purchases, fired it up, and everything worked just fine; picture and text were both clear and beautiful.
A week or so ago I grabbed a cheap hdmi cable from walmart to take advantage of the digital signal with no adapter jumps. I figured the digital signal would be superior. However, I noticed that the text was somewhat blurrier and/or had color distortions around the edges. Red "drawn" text (like you would find in video games, or perhaps a better example is the red text on the cbs website when you have adblock active) is almost illegible.
My attempted solutions -
1) Tried to adjust cleartext in windows. Re-adjusting didn't clear it, but turning it off by unchecking the box improved the desktop/browser texts to normal and clear. However, the red text issue still remains. Also, text in windows that win8.1 itself produces still has a small discoloration to it. Text on my desktop icons seems to be a bit thick now as well. It's almost as if the small shadows "underneath" the text are not rendering porperly.
2) Made sure all post processing effects were off on the tv (noise reduction, dynamic contrast, etc.), sharpness/color set correctly. The tv recognizes that it is a computer signal using the HDMI port, because it gives you an extra option setting for the screen called "full 100%," which states in the manual that it's using it dot-by-dot. I tested it, and the option is not available when the tv is not hooked into the computer. The vga port is labeled "pc" on the tv, and it's screen format is actually called "dot-by-dot."
3) Made sure all CCC settings were right: scalings were correct with 0% overscan/underscan, made sure ITC was off, and resolutions are correct at 1080p. Attempted other resolutions, but did not work.
4) Tried numerous color/gamma calibration tools, but to no avail.
Questions -
So, for my applications, is there any advantage to using hdmi over the vga connection? VGA is still capable 1080p and everything looks beautiful when using it, even if it is an analog signal. I would prefer just having the hdmi (digital->digital) connection, but as of right now I can't think of anything else to do.
I have read other threads on here with similar problems, but no solved questions applied to me. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
