Hi,

I current have "Patriot PVT36G1600LLK Viper I Tri Channel DDR3" memory that came with my overclockers.co.uk bundle about 5 years ago. This memory is now discontinued and have tried to get hold of it but seems very difficult.

If i was to upgrade my ram or add an extra, would i have to get something similar like brand/timing/mhz "Patriot Memory PV736G1600LLK Viper 2 Sector 7 DDR3 PC3-12800" for example (closest i could find to my current). Would i run into any problems with doing this? Or is it worth just replacing it all with new ram. My Bios auto over clocks my memory at the moment due to it having a over clocked option from overclockers.

Thanks

Joe

I had a similar situation and was able to find what I needed on Ebay. Buying used parts is always a risk but I did get what I needed and it was a no issue transaction. Be careful and ask the seller about returns and the such. Keep all correspondence for record until you are satisfied and keep the item.

So what do you have? Three 2gb sticks at 8-8-8-24, rated for 1.65 volts?

Just buy new ram at the same timings and voltage and it will almost certainly work. People mix and match ram all the time & it's amazing what overclockers get away with... way past the ram's advertised spec's! You could even underclock, say you had some slower ram; 9-9-9-28; you could just run it all at that slower speed.

But of course there could be always be an unforeseen compatibility issue... plus on a new builds, two 8gb sticks are pretty much the norm. With 32 gigs just another step away. So prob best to think about retiring the old LGA 1366 rig, rather than sinking money into it?

Thanks for the replies,

I didn't want to upgrade my Motherboard/cpu at this time. i run a i7 920 over clocked to 4ghz and has never let me down. and from what i have read/been told it will last me a little longer. (in the gaming front). so at the moment it was my GPU i was upgrading from ATI 5850 to AMD R9 280x (undecided) and i was thinking about my upping my ram to 8gb or above. I mean i probably Thanks for the replies,

There is some on eBay.
As Dogsnake mentioned that may be the way to go. And with ppl retiring 1366, there should be lots of good used ram for you.

Built on the 40nm fab process, a 5850 is really only one generation behind. And that was a strong GPU. Ya, best to get a 290/290x or 7970/50 to make that ungraded worth while.
______________
Edit:
The pricing on the 290 will likely be too high🙁 But I'm curious too and for the benchmarks!
But at $300, the 280x would be the reasonable decision.

hehe yeah im waiting on the pricing for the 290 / 290x. still undecided on my GPU. will be waiting for bf4 to come out and seeing benchmarks and price changes.

yeah i have been looking on ebay for memory and found a few bargains already today. So buying used ram and just replacing my current might be the best way to go then?

cheers
