Hi we have the bundle described above which was bought from Maplin it is coupled with 8GB of RAM a 250GB Crucial SSD and is awaiting the installation of a Sapphire RX580 Graphics card.

Currently when switched on it all lights up, but no signal to the monitor so can't tell what is happening.

I am a complete novice so please be gentle with me, thanks

It is an "Active" adapter? HDMI = Digital, VGA = Analog. So, to convert the signal, you need an "active" adapter.

You're sure it's HDMI to VGA? Typically, any adapter/converter is not bi-directional.... so HDMI to VGA does not work backwards as VGA to HDMI, for example.

For some reason, "passive" adapters exist (they don't process/convert anything).... I'm not sure why they exist, but they do.

Do you have a single cable, like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Gold-plated-Active-Adapter-Converter-Meters/dp/B074GW5D44/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1530046532&sr=8-5&keywords=active+hdmi+to+vga

Those are typically worthless - as far as I know, they serve no purpose whatsoever.

OR, do you have something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Adapter-Gold-Plated-Active-Converter/dp/B00YC7U0NE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1530046532&sr=8-4&keywords=active+hdmi+to+vga

That one, specifically, is "active".

If possible, can you post a specific product link (or model number) of what you're using?

Sorry had to go shopping!!!!

I have the one in the link below which I believe should be active.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01E8DD6J6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I hope this helps.

Can it take a while for the motherboard to recognise the graphics card? or does it matter which HDMI port we use?

The Monitor is an acer it is quite old but like I said it does work on other systems

Ok we have an Asus B350 Plus mother board, AMD Ryzen 5 1600 AM4 CPU, Crucial 8GB DDR4 RAM, Sapphire RX580 GPU, Crucial MX500 250 GB Internal SSD, Corsair CX750 PSU and finally a Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB 3.5 inch SATAIII Hard Drive which is in place but not plugged in

Black label, power to GPU connected, will try TV soon, link is very interesting thank you, just plugged in the speaker and are getting no bleeps at all despite the fan going and the motherboard LED's lighting up so I think we have some issues! may be in touch again soon

Hmm, if you're getting no beeps whatsoever with a speaker attached.... that's concerning.

You're sure it's a Ryzen5 1600 you have, not a 2600? If it's a 2600, that board needs a BIOS update to support it - that would give you the symptoms you're describing.

If it truly is a 1600, I'd reseat the CPU and memory - ensuring the 8pin EPS power is connected. Then go from there. I'd definitely try with a native HDMI-HDMI connection (to a TV) opposed to adapters, at least until you know everything is working as expected.

Thanks, the mother board came pre-assembled with fan etc. in place the only thing we did was take out the 4GB Ram and replace it with 8GB, plug it all in following instructions which didn't mention a speaker and nothing happened. I will persevere and try and get it to fire up! hope there is no terminal damage to the CPU
