i've used them all honestly.

mouse and keyboard
fps games, strategy games

mouse and gamepad
some rpgs

controller
some rpgs, action games

joystick and keyboard
flight sims, mech sims

for fps a mouse is hard to beat for accuracy. gamepads would b nice for movement but many games and pads lack true 360 sticks (most are 4 or 8 way). so i stick to keyboard arrow key entry for movement.

for action games and some action based rpgs it feels more natural to use a controller during combat. depends on the title though.

Ehh, well the controller is good for things where I need less buttons, but need to do "combos" that a keyboard doesn't easily allow.
Basically:

Any 3rd person game/melee combat = controller.
Any first person game/requires pinpoint accuracy = KBM.
Mechwarrior = joystick.

Depending on games. Some games simply wierd when you try to play them with mouse and keyboard. but for some games that have very good control port from controller to pc i find using mouse and keyboard combo is better. The example of this was the batman arkham series. Heck i can't even play the game with controller in the past. But with arkham knight i'm forced to properly play the game with controller. Because the batmobile control feels wierd with mouse+keyboard combo lol.

Anything that required shooting be it first or third person using mouse/keyboard is the better choice for me.

^ Yeah the Arkham Knight keybindings were totally weird. Who the hell would press [1] key 4 times? But i still played it with keyboard and mouse after editing most of the keybindings. The defaults were totally weird.
