The cynic in me is expecting to see paper launches from both AMD and Nvidia come April, the optimist hopes I'm wrong.

Paper launch means at least we will get to see actual review....just no card to buy on day release. We might see the repeat of GK110. just some rough spec like shader count, die size, what type of memory being use and such. But no core clock or even performance number. Even there is one it might be useless to us gamer; numbers for HPC application compared to previous gen teslas. Actual action might be at computex.

I'm not sure about NVidia, but AMD will get intereseting.

[strike]Since AMD is using FinFET instead of silicon, it's either going to be 1, Really rough for a little bit as they figure out how to use FinFET, or/and 2, It will be really good since FinFET works way better than silicon at very low nanometers.[/strike]

FinFET is actually another vendor for silicon. My bad, I was getting another material confused with finfet.

Isn't that they still using silicon? Just that in FinFet arrangement instead of planar like 28nm? Nvidia also going Finfet with TSMC 16nm. though i do heard about big company like intel and some other (like IBM maybe) are researching other material that can replace silicon since we almost at the limit on how small we can go with silicon.

The only thing I could see replacing Silicon on the periodic table is boron, because boron is the only half metal (it's been a while since chem) with less protons than silicon. However, any processor and transistor already does have boron that makes up p-type silicon in a transistor's base region. No chip can simply have one type of element, because then there would be no way for voltage in a transistor to make the depletion layer thinner for charge to flow by filling up p-doped holes with n-doped electrons.

 Yep your right. I was thinking about something else, Sorry!! However, Finfet should be slightly higher quality than Planar according to AMD.

Personally i'm still not buying the idea about nvidia next series called as Xxx series (like X80). To me it seems that the X in front of 80 reperesent the number of series not part of the naming scheme itself. And all this originate from a simple table that could be made by anyone.

Why? Where would that numbering scheme even come from? That would be completely random and honestly not even make sense. The x80 where X usually represents 10 would make much more sense. Where would 1800 even come from? They have gone 200, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800,900 then 1800?

Being called as GTX1800 still a lot better than being called as GTX1080 😀 . Also nvidia did use 4 digit numbering scheme before. After 9k series they start using the 3 digit scheme instead. The first being GTX100 series though we don't heard much about it because the 100 series is exclusive to OEM only (Same with 300 series). though i was hoping for nvidia to come up with something that entirely different than 4 digit or 3 digit scheme that they have been using for more than a decade.

At least they didn't go to this: "GTX 280 V2" 😛

Anyway things can change a lot in few years. Even maxwell is very different from first how nvidia envision it. volta was supposed to be ready for new HPC in 2017 but i'm not surprise if nvidia going to make some changes to volta like what happen with maxwell.

I still remember when 680 nearing it's launch there were also pictures showing the shroud with 670Ti carving on it. could be fake (some people got bored and have time for hobby like this 😛) or we might be looking on prototype unit. Nvidia also have few protorype unit that never go into public but some game dev have access into.

That Irritating moment when Amd/nvidia want to make us more eager to the pascal gpu's so they Release New gpu's for everything except gaming...

(nvidia by refreshing their Gpu with 24gb and AMD with pro duo and FirePro S9300 X2) 😀

It is... thats why it is meant for "developers"

Same as the r9 295x2 and gtx 690...

They made this gpu for those who need so much compute performance but dont want to crossfire Fury X
