Can my external HDD attached to my Dish receiver be accessed by my PC? I haven't tried it because I haven't needed to and it would be a bit of a hassle. Just wondering if anyone knows.

Solution
I have had several Dish DVRs, with internal and external drives. External drive is formatted in proprietary file system (probably some Unix variant), and cannot be accessed on an average PC. And even if you can, the recordings there are encrypted, and accessible only on your DVR.

Once upon a time (when DVRs were first introduced by Dish) some guy has managed to "crack" the recording scheme, and extract videos, bbut this was 10+ years ago.

If you just want to reclaim an external HDD for PC use - clean partition table, create new volume(s), format and use.

Which Dish receiver do you have? How is the HDD connected? USB most likely.

Go online and search for the applicable User Guide/Manual.

Read the installation and configuration instructions. Look at the connection diagrams if any.

What would have to happen is that the receiver is accessible as a network device (static IP) that is in turn sharing the external HDD.

And you have some admin access to the receiver for configuration purposes.
