Have a 2 year old desktop- 512G SSD NTFS main boot drive. When I tried to clone the drive the clone failed.
I noticed the message System (1)- (Damaged) Everything seems to work fine on the machine.. No data issues....

Its a super important computer and I don't want to reinstall all my programs if I can avoid it. Windows 11 Home... Kept well updated....
I just want the error repaired so I can clone the drive for a backup machine....

Any ideas? Thanks if you are out there.

Are you sure the application youre using for the backup is installed correctly, or if youre using a boot disk that the boot disk is fully functional? Also i remember i had a weird issue in the past where macrium reflect wouldnt let me clone the recovery partition of windows, but the clone would work fine if that wasn't selected. You could try backing up everything but the recovery partition and seeing if that helps.

Hello,

I have backups....I am wanting to be able to clone the drive. But seems like all the disk clone programs see this error on drive C...I'd like to repair the error without reinstalling if possible.
The computer seems to be working fine. I just cannot clone the drive due to this error...

This drive is the c: system drive- I guess all my programs are installed to this drive....
Everything is installed properly....I have tried 3 different clone programs..Macrium etc...They all show this drive C error...but it only seems to cause a clone to fail....Everything seems fine on the machine

Which application are you using?

And by backups, I also meant full drive clones or Images. Not just your data.

So, it would appear that some bit of data on the drive is corrupt.
Just something that you're not actually using often.

In Macrium, can you make an Image, rather than a clone?

Haven't tried making an image....didn't want to screw up the drive by using a repair utility and then not be able to boot.....I am using disk genius ....It has an option verify/repair bad sectors...I was wondering if this can screw the whole drive up?

Yes, it can make things worse.

Try a Macrium Image.
That will probably fail as well, but worth a try.

There are applications that will do an actual sector by sector clone, and ignore bad spots.
I think even the Forensic copy function in Macrium does this.

But...you're just copying bad data into the clone.

Macrium fails....It's not worth trying the verify or repair bad sectors? What about the Windows Chkdsk? My goal is to clear off the error...not necessarily to immediately make a disk image....
I'm trying not to do a windows reinstall...

Thank you

If I give up.. does resetting the PC and reinstalling windows that way....remove the errors usually?

Before you try any fix it on the disk you might want to copy out any important stuff you can't afford to lose......pics/docs/etc.

Just in case the fix it trashes the disk.

Thank you so much for the help. Is it too risky to try and repair the bad sectors after I make the clone?
I have tons of backups but reinstalling takes forever and of course I would rather avoid it.....
BUT...the machine is 2 years old...The drive is getting full...and It's a fast machine I really like so I would be happy to replace the drive ..Cloning brings all my previous mess with me...but reinstalling takes time.. Is there a way to truly optimize the drive or the cloned drive so it is like new, but all my programs are still installed? ( I can dream!)

One other issue is when I clone this 512k drive to a 1TB drive it doesn't give me the extra storage on the bigger drive...( I was able to clone with donemax disk clone) It just clones as a 512GB drive...Is there a way to clone on a bigger drive and have the extra space?

This all started because I was starting to run out of space on the C: drive...then I noticed the error when I tried to clone..... as the clone failed with the popular cloning programs....
And....here we are.....Ultimate goal was to restore C: drive and the computer to as close to like new performance as possible....
without reinstall.

truly appreciate the advice and help. I know a ton about trading futures on news events, and Ninja Trader. If you have any questions...feel free to ask.

I would still clone the SSD to an image file on a HDD. A tool such as ddrutility can tell you which files, if any, are affected by bad sectors. When you get to this point, you can then decide how to proceed -- either a complete reinstall, or a file-by-file restore.

Interesting info maybe? Is it possible my c drive has multiple partitions? I think i inserted a pic from my google drive of my drive.....

You say that everything is working fine. If so, then cloning with DMDE will make an exact sector-by-sector copy of your drive.

If you like, you can use DMDE's Tools -> Copy Sectors function to copy the 260MB "damaged" partition to an image file and then ZIP it and upload it for us to examine.
