Question Disk Management Showing A SSD That Isn't There? (Windows)

Hi,

I had windows 10 and recently upgraded to Win 11 - that isn't part of the issue as this drive was also there in Win 10.

So, basically, after upgrading to Win 11 I decided I wanted to clean up my drives/partitions with Disk Management (DM). DM showed 3 drives - 1 HD and 2 SSD's.

  • Disk 0 is a Seagate 1TB HD - which has my OS on it
  • Disk 1 is a Kingston 500GB SSD being used to store files
  • Disk 2 shows as being a Samsung 500GB SSD
Thing is I have no Samsung SSD in the computer. I did at some point in the past but it isn't there now. I opened up the computer to confirm this. Inside it shows only 2 drives (the ST and the Kingston) connected to the SATA 6 ports. I've tried everything I can think of in DM to delete this drive. It will not let me get rid of the 99MB Healthy (EFI System Partition). I also went into Disk Partition and used the "delete part 1 override" command but it will not delete it.

How do I get rid of this non-existent SSD?

You can't delete it in Disk Management, because DIsk 2 is where the boot partition lives.

But the bigger issue is, why does that Samsung appear at all.

Are you 100% sure it is not hiding somewhere?
Some systems have a SSD mount on the backside of the case or motherboard. Or, being an NVMe, under a shield or heatsink.
Have another look.

I have both the fron and the back covers off. I show to SATA connectors - 1 for the ST HDD and 1 for the Kingston SSD. I can see the Kingston one clearly and the ST HDD is buried behind a lot of cables. There is no other drive visible and they are onlt 2 drives connected to the MB that I can see?

See "dusty" pics :)

ASUS Strix Z 370-F
There are 2x M.2 ports.

Top one circled in red.
Other one, underneath that shield at the bottom right.
I suspect that is where your Samsung drive is hiding.

Many thanks. I forgot that it has a form factor of a memory stick!!

Not sure the computer will boot up after I remove it.

Is there away to get rid of the partition on it so that I don't have to remove it?

TBH it really annoys me. If I pull it and just plug it back in will it still be there (that annoying partition)?

I guess if it is then I will just reinstall (I must be mad!! :)) and make sure that all files are put on the ST HDD as my primary OS?

Win 10 really really benefits from being installed on an SSD.
There is a VERY large performance difference.

Yes, if you remove the Samsung drive, the system will not boot up.
