Question Disk optimization issue

Hey guys. I just got a laptop from one of my cousins to use for college that is running Windows 7. Since it was pretty slow I decided to do some things, including a disk optimization. When I clicked on “optimize disk” it told me to restart my system and once I did that my system rebooted with a black screen with white lines of text saying “2 percent completed. (020908 out of 378608 files processed)” and I can’t seem to do anything to get out of it. The problem is that it’s taking a really long time and I need to finish a paper. Is there a way to interrupt the process without damaging the hard drive?

try ctrl-C or crtl-Z

FYI, don't work on the laptop when you have paper to do.

Do NOT interrupt it once started (in fact ctrl-C or ctrl-Z do not work here) or you risk filesystem damage. The process will take as much time as it needs to take. As said above do not start such things when time is of the essence.
