Hey there guys. I bought a laptop in December 2010 and used it on a daily basis until about June 2012 when I swapped to a desktop. Since then it's been mostly unused (only used for when I traveled to Korea to visit family) - and I've never dropped it, spilled water on it - none of those shenanigans.

The last time I used the laptop was about a month ago (late August 2015) for probably some file moving, and since then it's been sitting on my desk. Today I tried to boot it up to retrieve some files (like movies and whatnot) but then on boot-up it gave me a "disk read error... press ctrl+alt+delete to restart" error - and it's stuck on that screen forever.

I've tried a bunch of times, and I can go into the BIOS just fine but everything seems to be working fine. My BIOS recognizes the hard drive itself (shows boot#1 as CD-DVD drive and boot#2 as my HDD, SATA078 blah blah). People online seem to recommend some recovery option through hitting F8 on startup but that does nothing. So basically I can only access the BIOS which has not been helpful at all. And I'm really at a loss.

Can hard drives even go bad so suddenly? I mean, I turned my laptop off that one day a month ago - and it was working perfectly fine. No noises, no drops, no spills, no nothing! Is there something I can do to get my laptop working again? Or am I completely screwed? Please help. I need some suggestions to try and fix this.

PS) I can't really afford another HDD for the laptop.. would love to find a way that confirms whether or not the HDD is completely screwed or not!

How should I go about taking out the drive from my laptop? In the 5 years I've had it I've never actually opened up the compartment.
