This sounds pretty unfortunate, indeed. However, there are other things that could be causing these spikes of disk usage. I'd advise you to check your Resource Monitor in Windows for any other processes that could also be interfering with your SSD performance. Use
the SSD's brand-specific utility to check whether its firmware is up-to-date. I'd also suggest you try swapping the SATA cable and the SATA port where this SSD is connected to the motherboard (if you have a desktop PC). A failed connectivity to the drive could also spike the usage.
Have you also run
an SSD-specific diagnostic tool to see what the SMART attributes and overall health is? It is also highly recommended to perform full backup of your SSD somewhere off-site (externally) before you proceed with the troubleshooting! This is how you will avoid any potential data loss!
